Side Weight Horseshoes
Title
Side
Weight
Horseshoes
Coverage / Year
1914 to 1920s
Description
One
side
of the
shoe
was
longer
than the
other
,
either
the
left
or the
right
depending
on
which
hoof
of the
horse
it
was
placed
on.
The
long
side
of the
side
weight
shoe
was
always
closest
to the
inside
of the
horse's
leg.
Interpretation
Just
like
people
sometimes
wear
corrective
shoes
to
help
them
walk
without
injury
,
horses
as
well
sometimes
need
special
shoes.
When
some
horses
walk
, their
hind
hooves
graze
the
side
of their
front
legs.
The
side
weight
shoe
would
put
enough
weight
on the
hind
hoof
to
cause
it
to
angle
away
from the
front
leg
,
thus
correcting
the
problem.
