| Interpretation | From the American Bottom (the area on the east side of the Mississippi River from the mouth of the Missouri River about seventy miles south), voyageurs carried flour, wheat, and maize (Indian corn), to New Orleans and points along the way. The American Bottom was known as the bread basket. It supplied much of the grain and flour for New Orleans. From New Orleans up the river, the voyageurs transported sugar, beverages, lead shot, and Indian trade goods. |
