| Description | Poster, color, 20 x 28 in., published by the United States Government Printing Office |
| Interpretation | The U.S. Merchant Marine played a critical role in World War II. It was the means to carry personnel, supplies, and equipment needed by the Allies. Through recruitment efforts like this poster the U.S. Maritime Service training program was able to increase the number of mariners from 55, 000 to over 215, 000. Facing danger from submarines, mines, armed raiders and destroyers, and aircraft, over 8300 of these sailors were estimated to have been killed at sea during the war. The importance of the U.S. Merchant Marine is expressed succinctly by Fleet Admiral Chester with Nimitz, U.S. Navy, Chief of Naval Operations: "Not one of us who fought in the late war can forget - nor should any citizen be allowed to forget - that the national resource which enabled us to carry the war to the enemy and fight in his territory and not our own was our Merchant Marine."
