| Interpretation | President Franklin D. Roosevelt delivered the "Four Freedoms" speech ot Congress on Janury 6, 1941. Roosevelt's speech appealed to America's deeply held beleifs about freedom. In alerting Congress and the nation to the necessity of war, he also offered the prospect of extending American ideals of individual liberties throughout the world. Illustrator Norman Rockwell created a series of paintings (of which this is one) on the "Four Freedoms" theme, which were published in the Saturday Evening Post magazine. Later these paintings served as the focal point for the United States war bond drive. |
