| Interpretation | Until President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the War Department re-opened military service for citizens of Japanese-American ancestry in 1943, Japanese-Americans were not allowed to join the army. President Roosevelt announced the formation of an all Japanese-American military unit, on February 1, 1943 - composed of volunteers from Hawaii and the mainland. The new unit was designated the 442md Regimental Combat Team. At that time President Roosevelt included the text of this poster in his speech. |
