| Title | Rebel Works in front of Atlanta, No. 1 |
| Coverage / Year | 1864 |
| Description | Reproduction of a black and white photograph of the Rebel Works in front of Atlanta, No. 1. Source: Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign, Embracing Scenes of the Occupation of Nashville, the Great Battles around Chattanooga and Lookout Mountain, the Campaign of Atlanta, March to the Sea, and the Great Raid through the Carolinas. New York, 1866. Dimensions: 8"x10". |
| Interpretation | "His [Sherman's] first movement of troops to effect this was the ordering of the Army of the Tennessee to the extreme right of the line, their late positions being held by a line of cavalry vedettes. The movement to the right seemed to meet a similar movement on the part of the enemy, who, on the 28th instance of July, attacked the Fifteenth Corps, then the extreme right of our line. The troops were just going into position when the rebels made their advance." Barnard, George N. Photographic Views of Sherman's Campaign. (New York: Dover Publications, 1977), p. xvi. |
