This
19th
century
stalk
rake
was
used
to
remove
stalks
in the
field
from the
previous
year's
corn.
Interpretation
The
beginning
of the
corn
planting
season
meant
using
a
stalk
rake
to
clear
the
fields
of
stalks
from the
previous
year.
Raking
was
laborious
work.
Brown
stalks
gathered
from the
fields
were
piled
and
burned.
