Interpretation
This
cutter
was
designed
for
cutting
sugar
into
small
pieces.
Sugar
came
in
cones
or
blocks
(see
68.1.2098)
and was
very
expensive.
Sugar
cutters
were
needed
to
cut
the
sugar
into
usable
amounts.
It
is
not
possible
to
grow
cane
sugar
in
northern
climes
and
early
settlers
in
Illinois
used
very
little
of
it.
Sweetners
such
as
sorghum
and
molasses
were
much
more
