DescriptionWooden ballot box with a padlock and keys. One single wire and wooden handle on the front of the box. Slot cut in top of the box for a handle. 20.75" high.
InterpretationThis ballot box was used in the Hensley town Hall in Hensley township in Champaign County, IL. In order to vote in 1860 in Illinois you needed to be a state resident, twenty-one years old, and a man. In 1840 you needed to own property in order to vote. At that time over 80% of eligible voters cast ballots in national elections.
