DescriptionPhotograph. Threshing scene on the Allen Grant Little farm, Hensley Township, Champaign County, Illinois. Image shows a threshing crew operating a steam thresher attached to a blower. Several full wagons are in the foreground, along with waterbarrels and a water truck.
InterpretationIn 1881, Allen Grant Little and his parents and two brothers moved to an 160 acre farm in Hensley township. At age 21 Allen began keeping a journal of his farm life experiences, which he maintained for 27 years between 1888-1917. This picture of a threshing crew on the Little farm shows a threshing ring in action. Steam threshers were too expensive for most individual farmers to own, so a group would either buy one together, or hire a professional thresher to thresh their grain. The group of farmers would work together to bring the crop in quickly. As this picture shows, threshing was also a social event involving large groups of people.
