Interpretation
This
fork
is
made
of
horn
and
iron.
It
was
already
old
when
it
was
used
by
John
S.
Williams
during
the
Civil
War.
John
Williams
served
in
Company
B
of the
13th
Kansas
Volunteer
Infantry.
The
Union
army
issued
mess
kits
and
equipment
to
soldiers
during
the
war
, but
some
chose
to
use
familiar
utensils
instead.
This
fork
had been in
John's
family
for
years
and
perhaps
he
carried
it
to
remind
him of
home.
