All-Bisque Japanese Baby Doll
Title
All-Bisque
Japanese
Baby
Doll
Coverage / Year
1915; Japan; United States
Description
This
is
an
all-bisque
baby
doll
that has
moveable
arms.
The
doll
has a
painted
face
with
features
including
black
eyes
,
pink
cheeks
,
red
lips
, and
light
colored
hair.
Interpretation
These
dolls
are
good
examples
of
Japan's
jump
into the
bisque
doll
market
during
World
War
I
,
when
European
exporters
had
stopped
their
shipments
to the
U.S.
Japan
who
before
exported
under
the
name
"Nippon"
wanted
to
gain
popularity
with the
American
consumers
and
hence
changed
their
name.
Because
patent
laws
were
still
lax
,
most
of these
dolls
were
direct
copies
of
German
bisque
dolls
and
although
most
were of
poorer
quality
, they were
cheaper
than
even
the
most
inexpensive
German
originals
,
making
them
accessible
to the
lot
of
American
consumers.
