Brown Composition Baby Doll
Brown Composition Baby Doll
Resource Typeimage
TitleBrown Composition Baby Doll
Coverage / Year1920s to 1940s;
DescriptionThis is a baby doll made of brown composition. She has moveable arms and legs and the eyes and lips seem to have been repainted. The body is clothed in a dress of light weight cotton. The skirt of the dolls costume has a toy patternand there is a matching coronet on the head. She also wears a diaper which is safety pinned in the front.
InterpretationThis brown composition baby doll looks very similar to one made in 1930 America. There are many of these in existence today and they came in many sizes. When the U.S. became a large doll supplier in the 1920's, they began to produce black dolls by similar methods used in other countries. These methods included merely painting white dolls black or brown, allowing black dolls to be made in large quantities which explains their numbers today. Later, when companies began taking an interest in their African American consumers, they began taking the extra step in designing a special mold that more realistically reflected African American children.
