| Interpretation | As with adults, children left home for a variety of reasons: hard times, the lure of the road, dislike of school, family problems. Thomas Minehan in his book "Boy and Girl Tramps of America", written in 1934, stated that "fully half of the boys and girls on the road" were younger than eighteen. Even the Civilian Conservation Corps, which was developed to help young men could do nothing for them as they could not meet the eligibility requirements of being eighteen and having dependents, a residence, and a reference. |
