InterpretationThe charter of the Chicago and Alton railroad was granted February 27, 1847. Linking Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City this railroad connected the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River and thus played a vital role in the economic development of the Midwest. Main line passenger trains had become fewer in the 1930s. This picture of train no. 11 at Bloomington in 1938 has no passenger cars.
