TitleMen's suit
Coverage / Year1936
DescriptionDrawing, pen and ink
InterpretationThis image from Esquire Magazine, May 1936, shows the quintessential gray flannel suit with a two-button peaked-lapel jacket and black homburg hat. The Depression saw the decline of the youth cult in America and the cosmopolitan lifestyle of the rich inspired the new fashions. As with women's fashions of this time, the mature man once again assumed leadership in this area. Broad-shouldered suits with the waist nipped in at the front and sides and high-waisted, full-cut, double-pleated trousers influenced men's suits and coats for the next two decades.
