Print of Abraham Lincoln, the Lincoln Home and horse
Print of Abraham Lincoln, the Lincoln Home and horse
TitlePrint of Abraham Lincoln, the Lincoln Home and horse
Coverage / Year1865; Middle Victorian, Springfield, IL
Description"Mr. Lincoln, Residence and Horse/In Springfield, Illinois... On His Return". Lincoln on horseback, riding black horse, in front of home, waves top hat to crowd of well-dressed people. From SW corner. Lincoln's picture is based on reverse of photo taken Feb. 9, 1864. L 22" x W 17 1/4".
InterpretationThis is supposed to depict Lincoln returning from the Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858 but there are several mistakes--Lincoln is wearing a beard which he did not have until 1861 and he usually rode in a carriage to and from the debates. He also appears to be leaving, not returning.
