DescriptionLocket containing human hair. Oval locket, surrounded by two strands of twisted thick wire. Front side of locket contains four plumes of hair; back side contains three plumes, all under glass. Broken-braided human hair chain with clasp on top. L 1 5/8" x W 1 3/8".
InterpretationAn example of the use of human hair as a keepsake in Antebellum jewelry. It was considered the mark of a well-bred lady for her to be able to weave or crochet hair into something pretty and/or useful.
