| Interpretation | Political medallions, and similar trinkets, were popular in American elections. Worn pinned to a lapel. Medallions like this one were used in both the 1860 and 1864 presidential campaign. The tradition died out with the increasing availability of the cheaper campaign button, and the later invention of a process to transfer photographic images to paper for newspapers and posters. |
