Coverage / Year1943
DescriptionPoster, color, 16 x 22.5 in., published by the United States Government Printing Office
InterpretationIn 1942 corporations had begun to shift into war materials production, limiting the amount of goods available to the consumer. The government stopped production of automobiles in December 1941, to conserve steel, glass, and rubber for the war industries. Automobile manufacturers began to produce tanks and aircraft. In January 1942, the government also stopped production of vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, radios, sewing machines, and phonographs. These items and nearly 300 others - including coat hangers, beer cans, and toothpaste tubes - were considered non-essential to the war effort. The manufacture of many of these other items was curtailed or banned. The Office of Price Administration often used the slogan on this poster to promote the virtue of self-sacrifice to help the war effort.
