Screwdriver
Title
Screwdriver
Coverage / Year
1913 to 1923
Description
Hand
made
screwdriver
with
5"
oval
handle.
Painted
black
with a
twisted
head.
13"
long.
Interpretation
This
screwdriver
was
made
in the
Chesebro
Blacksmith
Shop
in
Saunemin
,
Illinois.
Ralph
and
Elmer
Chesebro
operated
the
shop
and
repaired
buggies
,
shoed
horses
, and
sharpened
plows.
They were also
capable
of
making
a
tool
for any
task.
Factory-made
screwdrivers
were
easily
available
, but
Ralph
and
Elmer
probably
made
this
one
for a
special
project
they were
working
on.
Blacksmithing
was a
profession
that
required
broad
knowledge
and
flexibility--and
was
very
different
from
today's
machine
processes.
The
Early
American
Museum
has a
substantial
amount
of
information
about
the
Chesebro
shop
and
blacksmithing
in
general.
