| Interpretation | Longfellow's well-known poem, "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, " spells out how Paul Revere and the other riders would know the approach of the British - "One if by Land, Two if by Sea." The sexton hung two lanterns in the tower, and the patriots were off to warn the countryside that the British would be coming by sea. Soon the American Revolution was in full swing. Boston was a very English town, with many family ties to London. Some residents remained loyal to the crown. They were known as loyalists or Tories. |
