Wrought
iron
miner's
candlestick
with
adjustable
candle
holder
and
spike
for
driving
into the
wall
of a
mine.
Interpretation
This
coal
miner's
candlestick
was
used
to
provide
a
little
light
inside
a
mine.
Mining
was
hard
,
dangerous
work.
Over
500
miners
were
killed
every
year
, and
thousands
injured
in the
late
19th
century.
Coal
was a
very
important
natural
resource
in the
industrialization
of the
United
States.
It
powered
mills
and
factories
, and the
average
middle
class
family
burned
over
two
tons
every
year
just
to
heat
their
home.
