| Description | The 1911 S & M Simplex Open Touring Car is a five-passenger convertible. The six-cylinder, water-cooled engine is located in the front. It has a four speed selective transmission and a double chain drive. The car has four whitewall rubber tires and one spare tire stored on the running board. It has a two-piece folding windshield and a collapsible canvas cover top. The seats are upholstered leather. |
| Interpretation | The S & M Simplex Automobile Company produced one of the most renowned cars in America during the years before World War I. The Simplex was both a touring and racing car. It was also a large luxury car enjoyed by an elite clientele. In this regard the Simplex is very similar to the more famous Duesenberg automobile (see Museum of Science and Industry record on Duesenberg). Both cars combined high-speed racing engines with luxury design. They were produced in limited quantities and extremely expensive to purchase. |
