TitlePainting: Lady in a Garden
Coverage / Yearc. 1890
DescriptionA painting of a woman seated in a shaded part of a garden setting. She holds an Oriental parasol and wears a multi-color Oriental robe over a white gown. A table and another chair is beyond her. Dimensions are 29" x 36".
InterpretationPalmer was one of Illinois' leading Impressionist painters, using their characteristic light palette and preferring intimate views of figures in a garden setting. She was born in McHenry, Illinois to immigrants fleeing European revolutions in 1848. Her parents encouraged her interest in drawing by sending her to the best art teachers in McHenry and nearby Harvard, Illinois. She studied at a Milwaukee convent, then spent six years at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before studying landscape and figure painting in Paris with American expatriate Richard Miller. Palmer worked in Brittany and Giverny, France and in Italy before returning to Chicago. She worked as supervisor of art in the public school system and enjoyed a prolific career. Her paintings won scores of prizes and were exhibited throughout the United States, France and Italy. She and her physician husband maintained a summer home in Provincetown, Massachusetts where many other American Impressionist artists gathered in the summers. Palmer filled numerous commissions for portraits from members of Chicago's high society among whom Impressionism was very popular. She was the first woman to serve as president of the Chicago Society of Artists.
