Interpretation
Curry's
earliest
ambition
was to be an
artist.
After
studies
at the
Kansas
City
Art
Institute
and the
Art
Institute
of
Chicago
he
worked
as an
illustrator.
He
studied
for
one
year
in
Paris
, then the
University
of
Wisconsin-Madison
hired
him as
Artist
in
Residence
in an
effort
to
encourage
the
people
of
rural
Wisconsin
to
cultivate
their
creative
spirits.
Like
his
fellow
American
Regionalist
or
American
Scene
painters
such
as
Thomas
Hart
Benton
and
Grant
Wood
,
Curry
depicted
what he
knew
best:
rural
and
small
town
Midwestern
scenes.
Man
in
nature
was a
consistent
theme
of his
paintings
,
murals
and
prints.
Curry
often
drew
on
memories
of his
childhood.
His
subjects
reassuerd
the
public
during
the
hard
times
of the
Depression.
