Interpretation
In the
19th
century
,
Native
Americans
invented
a
new
type
of
square
bag
attached
to a
wide
strap
("bandolier")
copied
from the
type
of
cartridge
belt
which
European
soldiers
wore
over
one
shoulder.
These
bags
became
fashionable
among
Wisconsin
and
Minnesota
men
about
1850
for
use
in
ceremonies
and
dances.
The
decoration
was
done
in
porcupine
quills
,
beadwork
or
embroidery
with
wool
yarn
and
became
increasingly
more
elaborate.
Floral
motifs
such
as
we
see
on this
bandolier
bag
were not
indigenous
(native
or
original)
to
Native
Americans;
they
borrowed
them from the
European
settlers.
