| Title | S.S. Kresge Building, Champaign, Illinois |
| Coverage / Year | 1983 |
| Description | West side of Neil Street, just south of Church Street, Champaign. |
| Interpretation | S.S. Kresge building was the site of Champaign's first Kresge five-and-dime store. The Sansone popcorn truck was often parked outside the store. In the 1960s, the construction of large shopping malls, located on the outskirts of Champaign and Urbana communities, led to a decline of long-established downtown businesses in Champaign and Urbana as well as the outlying Champaign County communities. Private downtown development groups were formed and a search for ways to save the downtown became a high priority of the Chamber of Commerce leadership and municipal government officials. |
