This was the
first
published
map
to
show
of
all
five
Great
Lakes
in their
proper
geographical
relation
to
one
another.
Sanson
compiled
this
map
from a
variety
of
sources.
These
include
, for the
region
of the
Great
Lakes
,
geographical
knowledge
gained
by
French
Jesuit
missionaries
and
explorers
such
as
Jean
Nicolet
who
penetrated
into the
Green
Bay
region
circa
1634.
Sanson
is
considered
the
founder
of the
French
school
of
geography
of the
seventeenth
century.
