became
one
of the
foremost
cartographers
of the
early
eighteenth
century.
The
general
accuracy
,
latitude
and
longitude
of
geographic
features
are
greatly
improved
over
previous
maps.
Thus
,
correcting
the
myth
of
California
as an
Island
and
placing
the
mouth
of the
Mississippi
River
toward
the
east.
Many
interesting
place-names
and
sites
within
the
Illinois
country
may
be
gleaned
from
De
L™Isles™
maps.
These
include
references
to
lead
mines
(Mine
de
plomb)
within
what was to
become
the
lead-mining
district
of
Illinois
,
Wisconsin
and
Iowa.
There are also
many
early
villages
,
forts
and
American
Indian
tribes
depicted.
