William Bross, ex-Lieutenant-governor and "deacon" extraordinary, easily took first rank, because--well, because he was "Deacon" Bross." William Bross (1813-1890) was a journalist and served as Lieutenant Governor. (Source: Encyclopedia of Chicago.) Image is undated but appears to be from the 1860s.
