Staff Development and Training Commitee Minutes

Present:  Lisa Hinchliffe, Joe Zumalt, Zoe Revell, Sue Searing, Beth Woodard, Diana Walter,  Michael Norman

Absent:  Tom Teper, Cindy Kelly, Susie Duncan

Zoe Revell noted that the University is canceling its subscription to a number of NetG classes.  We discussed the need to send a note letting the University know that this is an integral part of our training program, and to let staff know that the offerings are changing.

John suggested that we may want to find out how much it’s been used.  Sue Searing wondered what the cost was and if it would be feasible for the library to pay for some courses.  A suggestion was made that we ask Stephanie Baker about the courses that she examined for the technical services staff, and that we confirm just what courses they are canceling.

For the staff orientation discussion, Lisa Hinchliffe suggested that we set a deadline for ourselves.

We need to find information and activities that are common to faculty, staff, and APs, and sort them by Immediacy and Optimalness.

It was suggested that we need to flow chart the process.  What kinds of things have to happen before you can get into Nessie.  What things depend on completing Nessie information, etc.  This checklist should be in the new employee packet.

An updated organizational chart is also needed.

Recommended 1st day niceties:  meet them at the start of their day, have someone go to lunch with them, give them a tour and introduce them to other staff members in the unit.

GOAL:  get the first paycheck on time!!!!

On November 2, if Cindy Kelly can come to the meeting, we will ask her to describe the process of hiring, starting when an offer is accepted.  What are the things that must happen?  Someone in the group will build a flow chart as she presents.  Lisa H. has Post-It flip charts that she can bring.  Perhaps Cindy can also provide us with samples of papers she sends out.

An early December deadline was suggested.

John will get the form that Systems uses to set up new employees.
