Annual Evaluation of the Associate University Librarians

  1. AUL Reports: Submit to the University Librarian by February 15thfor posting on the Library’s internal website (accessible to all Library faculty and staff):
    1. A report of three – five pages that lists and describes significant accomplishments for the calendar year in areas of primary responsibility and in Library strategic areas;
    2. A draft of major goals for individual and collaborative target activities for upcoming calendar year;
    3. A current curriculum vitae that includes information about professional service and research and publication activity.

 

  1. Survey:  A Library-wide web survey, administered by the Office of the University Librarian and reviewed/synthesized by the Library Executive Committee.  The survey is implemented in March, and it consists of the following questions.  All Library faculty and staff are encouraged by the Vice Chair of the Executive Committee to complete the survey.  Additionally, EC members use these questions to frame their own thoughts about the AULs’ performance:

 

1.      List up to three important challenges facing the AUL for (User Services/Collections and Technical Services/Research and Technology) in the next three years.

 

2.      Based on your experiences working with the AUL for (User Services/Collections and Technical Services/Research and Technology):

  1. What do you perceive as their greatest strengths?
  2. What do you perceive as being their greatest weaknesses?

 

3.      What should the AUL for (User Services/Collections and Technical Services/Research and Technology):

  1. Do less of to be most effective in supporting both the Library’s fulfillment of stated strategic goals and the activities of individual units?
  2. Do more of to be most effective in supporting both the Library’s fulfillment of stated strategic goals and the activities of individual units?
  3. Continue doing to be most effective in supporting both the Library’s fulfillment of stated strategic goals and the activities of individual units?

 

4.      With respect to the portfolios overseen by the AUL for (User Services/Collections and Technical Services/Research and Technology), what three areas do you believe should be given the highest priority in the coming year?

 

5.      Are there other questions or concerns that were not addressed in these questions that should be?

 

  1. Preparation of the Evaluations

 

  1. The University Librarian and the Library’s Executive Committee review the survey results;
  2. By April 30, the Executive Committee prepares individual evaluations based on the survey results and their own deliberations, and provides these to the University Librarian;
  3.  The University Librarian may meet with individuals for more in-depth in-person interviews regarding the performance of each AUL.
  4. The University Librarian prepares the final written or verbal evaluation for each AUL based on the written reports prepared by the Executive Committee and the feedback received from the post-survey interviews.
