Library Diversity Committee

Present: Emily Love, Chairing Meeting; Cindy Ingold; Geoff Ross, Gennye Varvel; Guest, Miquel Ruiz, LAMP student working with Emily

 

Absent: Paula Carns, Cindy Kelly, Kim Matherly, Pam Ward

 

 

  1. October 19 minutes were approved with changes

 

  1. Movie Short Series

Two snack breaks (Nov. 10 and Nov. 15) are planned to show the film Schwarzfahrer (Black Rider). We talked about whether the session should be moderated because people might not understand the double meaning for the German word Schwarzfahrer; we decided to let the session be organic. Emily will create a brief assessment form. During our discussion, the issue of academic freedom and free speech came up especially for Academic Professionals and  classified staff.  We want to make sure everyone attending the sessions will feel comfortable speaking up without fear of retaliation.  Emily will check with Cindy Kelly about this and she will say something about this tomorrow. 

 

3.      Diversity Statement

Paula Kaufman approved our statement. Emily will post on the Diversity and Multicultural information website (http://www.library.illinois.edu/ugl/diversity/) and the Diversity Committee web site (http://www.library.illinois.edu/committee/diversity/charge.html). Once this is done Cindy I. will send a note to Libnews. Emily plans on making postcards that we can give to job candidates and hand out at library locations.

 

  1. Spring programming

We discussed several ideas for spring programming including having Ross Wantland and Katy Weseman from the Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations do another program.  Cindy I will check with Cindy K about the status of the session on communication with international students.

 

Emily provided the following information on the Forgiveness Project http://theforgivenessproject.com/ . We could get 22 panels with 22 stories for one week for $250 plus shipping and handling.  We could have the Marshall Gallery for a week or two in April.  We also talked about having a program or a series of speakers to go along with the exhibit.  We would ask the Cultural Centers, OIIR, Hillel, etc to co-sponsor.  Emily will continue to work on this and report back at our December meeting.

 

  1. Cindy and Emily prepared a 2009-2010 Diversity Committee Report which went to Paula Kaufman.

 

6.      New Business

We have no news on a possible retreat in January.
