Meeting MINUTES

428 Main Library

August 10, 2010

10-11 a.m.

Present: Cindy Ingold, co-chair; Paula Carns, B.A. Davis-Howe, Cindy Kelly, Kim Matherly, Gennye Varvel

Absent: Emily Love

1.      Approval of July 12^th minutes

Minutes were approved without changes.

2.      Diversity Statement Discussion

The committee had a long discussion about the diversity statement.  The most significant change was deleting the laundry list of differences and replacing them with four categories, social, cultural, mental, and physical differences.  We also made other editorial changes based on discussions from the cookie breaks.  Cindy I will edit this final draft and send to committee for comments.  The statement will then go to Paula Kaufman for final approval.

3.      Fall Program Ideas

• Communication with international students

Cindy Kelly contacted the Office of International Students and Scholars about setting up training on communication with international students. The Staff Development and Training Committee working on setting up training sessions for new student employees and supervisors to begin in January.   However, Cindy said we could offer some open sessions after Labor Day to all library employees; these would be co-sponsored by the Diversity Committee.

• Movie Shorts Series: Committee would like to do this as a cookie break in November. Also discussed another movie night in February.

4.      Updates:

• New members of the committee are Geoff Ross and Pam Ward. Cindy I will send a welcome message to them including the dates and times for our meetings.
• Cindy I said she and Emily will be providing a 20 minute orientation to diversity at the new GA Traininig.
• Everyone agrees that the second Tuesday of each month from 10am -11am is a good time to meet for 2010-2011. However, we will be meeting in 230B Library.
• We agreed we do not need to invite Paula K to a meeting until the Library begins its own strategic planning process

5.      Other/New Business??

Cindy K reported on the bullying session held in July. 12 people attended including both faculty and civil service staff. Helena Worthen from Labor and Employment Relations led the session.  She is retired but graciously left her material with Cindy K who will be offering additional sessions.
