Library Diversity Committee Meeting Minutes

December 6, 2005

Present: Cindy Ingold, Chair; Mary Beth Allen; Lori Carroll; Shuyong Jiang

  1. Cindy volunteered to take minutes for the meeting.

  2. Cindy updated members on the search for the Outreach Librarian for Multicultural Services. The search committee met on November 30 and they are finalizing the job ad. Once this is done, the position description will go to Paula Kaufman, Bob Burger, Lisa Romero, as Affirmative Action Officer, and Yoo-Seong Song, as Chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Committee. After all these parties have approved the ad, it will go to the University to be approved. Then the search can be posted.

  3. Committee discussed holding a session on working with people with disabilities. We felt that this would not be a training session but rather a session to raise awareness. Mary Beth suggested showing a video that ALA has produced and that we have in the Media Center. Mortensen center also has a copy. Mary Beth will borrow the copy from Mortensen, and the three committee members at the meeting agreed to view the video before December 20. We will then decide if we want to show the video alone, and have a second session facilitated by someone from the Division of Rehabilitation-Education Services, or if we want to show the video and have someone speak at the same meeting. Mary Beth noted that room 295 in the Undergraduate Library is a room set up specifically for showing videos/DVDs.

  4. We discussed a possible web page for the committee. Lori and Cindy had found some examples of diversity committee web pages from other universities including:

    Committee needs to decide what we want on this page, and how much we want to be public.  Cindy said perhaps her GA could do a mocked up page. Cindy can also check with Kim Reynolds to find out if she or Donna can help create a web page for the committee.

  5. Future Meetings

    Cindy will be in touch with committee members in early January to schedule another meeting.  The first Tuesday of each month does not work for her.
