Library Diversity Committee Meeting Minutes

April 11, 2006

Present: Cindy Ingold, Chair; Silda Andrick, Lori Carroll, ShuYong Jiang

Guest: Cindy Kelly, Head of Library Human Resources

  1. Volunteer Minute Taker

    Cindy I. volunteered to take minutes for the meeting.

  2. Discussion with Cindy Kelly

    Cindy K. came to this meeting to provide input about issues the Diversity Committee might want to address. Cindy I. went over the history and charge of the committee. Cindy K. suggested several things we might want to consider, including:

    • Holding a lecture series with an invited speaker, two or three times per year
    • Facilitating informal brown bag discussions
    • Surveying library faculty and staff to get their ideas about diversity

    Cindy K. mentioned several issues/topics we might want to consider including: immigration; racial issues; sexual orientation; ageism; religious issues; communicating with non-native English speakers. A few names of people who could address some of these issues are Pam Pirtle, the Assistant Director in the Office of Equal Opportunity and access, would be a good person to contact, and Julie Misa, International Student Affairs.

    Someone asked about patron complaints and who these go to.  C. Kelly said they often go to the AUL for Services but sometimes patron complaints come to Human Resources.

    The Committee will discuss the idea of doing a survey and what topics we might want to address at future meetings.

  3. Mary Beth will email Libnews to remind everyone about the videos, and check in with Bryan McMurray of DRES who will facilitate discussion.  The committee made final suggestions to the evaluation form; Cindy I. will send suggestions to Lisa Romero.

  4. Update on Search for Outreach Librarian for Multicultural Services

    Cindy Ingold updated the committee of the status of this search.

  5. Working with Lincoln Trails Library System

    Amanda McKay will come to our meeting on May 9 to discuss what LTLS is doing regarding diversity initiatives.  Cindy K. would like to join us for this meeting.

  6. Meeting in the Summer

    The committee will not meet in July because Cindy I. will be on vacation.  The committee will meet in June if needed.
