Downloading
and installing the Citrix software for Macintosh
Note:
You will need to install the and configure the Citrix client only once!
Once the client is installed on your machine, it can be used for all Citrix
resources.
- Open your browser (e.g.
Netscape or Explorer) and go to http://www.library.uiuc.edu/citrix/setup.htm
to get the ICA client software. This page will automatically determine
your client needs. When you click on the Macintosh link you will be
presented with the option for PowerPC or OS X. These download links
will take you directly to the Citrix download page where you can get
the latest Macintosh client. Note: Other clients
are available for older Mac's.
- The download files should
be in "Stuffit" form -- most browsers are set up to unstuff
things automatically. StuffIt Expander comes free with newer versions
of the Mac System software. You can also get it from www.aladdinsys.com.
- Once you have completed
the download, you should open the appropriate folder (the directory
to which you downloaded the file) and double-click on the 'Installer'.
Choose the location you wish to which you wish to install (the default
is the top level of your hard drive).
- Click 'Continue', then
accept the licensing terms by clicking on 'Yes'; then click 'Install'.
- Once the Installer has
done its work, click on 'Quit'.
It is recommended that you move the folder you just created -- named
simply by default "Citrix ICA Client", to your browser's "Plug-In's"
folder.
- When the installation is
compete, you will need to configure your browser and the ICA connection
(you will not need to do this each time you access
ULCCR. Once the connection has been made and set, access to the cd titles
will be made seamless from the links provided by the Electronic Resource
page.)
Configure
Internet Explorer for Mac
- On the File Menu,
select Edit menu, choose Preferences.
Depending on OS and IE version, Preferences may be
found under Explorer on the IE toolbar.
- Under Receiving
Files, click File Helpers.
- Click the Add
button and enter the following information:
- Description:
Citrix ICA Connection
- Extension:
.ica
- MIME Type:
application/x-ica
- In the
File Type section, click the Browse
button and browse for the Citrix ICA Connection Center
binary.
- Make certain that the File
Creator field is set to IICA.
- Set the File Type
to TEXT.
- In the Encoding
section, make certain that:
- Plain Text
is selected.
- Binary data
is not selected
- Macintosh file
is unchecked
- Use for incoming
is checked
- Use for outgoing
is unchecked
- In the Handling
section , select View with Application
from the drop-down list. Then browse once again for the Citrix
ICA Connection Center binary.
Note:
You may have more than one File Helper set to handle .ica files. Unless
you have a compelling reason to have this, it is recommended that you
configure only one and delete the rest. Having more than one could confuse
IE and not allow you access to the resource.
Configure
Citrix ICA Client Editor
Note:
You
should choose to configure the default settings for ULCCR connections
(described below). If you use Citrix to access other non-library resources,
you may want to configure the following settings without manipulating
the default settings.
- Open the Citrix
ICA Client Editor in the Citrix ICA Client Folder.
- Choose the Default
Settings... button.
- From the Server Location
tab, make the following choices:
- Network Protocol
make certain that TCP/IP is in the drop down menu.
- Encryption Level
is set to Basic.
- Server Group
should be Primary (you can choose to customize
this as desired).
- Click on the Add
button and enter the server address of: libsyslefty.library.uiuc.edu
- Click Save.
Note: You
have just altered the default settings. You should make
certain that Use Default is checked in those relevant
areas under the Network Connection and Security
tabs.
You are now ready to connect
to the available CD-ROM resources via Citrix.
Go to the Library's Electronic
Resource Search page and find the Citrix resource you wish to access.
(A list of all available Citrix titles can be found by entering "Citrix"
in the "Title" field and searching all resources).
You will be taken to a page
that will verify your IP and (if successful) give you the option of continuing
to the resource, downloading the Citrix client, or going to the Library
Systems Office Citrix Faq's (for more help). If you choose to continue
to the resource, your browser will start to download the application.
If presented with a request
for access to your hard drive you should allow full access. This will
allow Citrix to map back to your machine for printing and saving purposes.
For more information about printing and saving issues, please refer to
the Library
System's Office Citrix Faq's. You can also allow drive mapping from
the default settings in the Citrix ICA Client Editor.
