How Many MFHDs and Item Records Does It Take?

You need only one MFHD and one Item record when you have all of the following:

  1. a single location

  2. the same classification number

  3. a single copy

You need only one MFHD but more than one Item record any time there is more than one piece to barcode. This includes any time you have either of the following:

  1. more than one format in one location

  2. more than one volume in one location

You need multiple MFHD and Item records when you have any of the following:

  1. more than one location

  2. more than one classification number

  3. more than one copy

NOTE:

  1. The number of volumes does not affect the number of MFHDs.

  2. Every piece that has a barcode will require a separate Item record.
