S. Collection (school collection) housed in the Education Library has a unique
call number system at UIUC. The interest level of this collection is for all ages of children from
birth to young adulthood.
The classification scheme varies according to type of book.
All books in this collection have an S. in the classification.
SE. indicates a book that is predominately pictures with minimal text for young
readers.
S. + cutter indicates a book that is fiction (mostly text).
SB. Indicates a book that is an individual biography. (use the Cutter-Sanborn
table for these) As with any biography, check the online catalog for other biographies about
your subject to keep them together. Cutter for the biographee and workmark for the main entry.
S. + Dewey classification indicates a book that is non-fiction. Use a Dewey
classification that will make the number specific for the subject without being overly long.
Examples: "predatory insects": 595.715 = insects, 595.7153 = predatory insects; put graphic novels
in 741.5 + country of author/artist.
One exception is any book that is folklore will be classed in 398.2 no matter the age level.
We follow the same cuttering rules as any book, that is, each author within a classification
needs a unique cutter using the Four Figure Cutter Table. The Q., or F. does not make a call
number unique. (see cutter document for full instructions on cuttering).
When entering your call number into the Voyager cataloging client please follow these
examples:
852 8 ≠b edk ≠h SE. ≠i (cutter) ≠t 1
852 8 ≠b edk ≠h S. ≠i (cutter)
≠t 1
852 8 ≠b edk ≠h SB. ≠i (cutter) ≠t 1
852 8 ≠b edk ≠h S. (Dewey) ≠i (cutter)
≠t 1
If you have an oversized book you will of course need to insert ≠k Q. or F.
preceding the ≠h subfield.
