Cuttering

Cutter for the main entry:

1XX field (personal or corporate author)
245 field (title)

When using the electronic Cutter Table always choose the Four-figure Cutter Table.   After clicking on the Cutter icon, if you do not have the Four-figure Cutter table displayed, go to view and choose it.

From the first word in the main entry use:

1 letter for consonants
2 letters for vowels
2 letters for S
3 letters for Sc

You will find that the Cutter Table will provide the proper letters as listed above.

This is followed with the first 3 digits of the number from the Cutter Table.  Do not end the cutter number with a 0(zero). If the 3 rd number is a 0(zero) either use only the first two numbers or use all four numbers from the Cutter Table.

Type each word in your main entry as it appears, with spaces between words until the Cutter Table stops adding/changing numbers.

Treat names beginning both with Mc and Mac as Mac when choosing the cutter number.

Use the same cutter number for all of an author's works within the same classification.

Example: Keynes, John Maynard   330.156 K 52e  or  330.156 K 52g

The workmark, taken from the first important word of the title of the work, makes the call number unique.  If two or more works by the same author begin with the same letter (general, great, grand) use 2 or more letters for the workmark (g, gr, gra) to make a unique call number.

If the cutter number has been used already then expand it for the new main entry by adding numbers.

Example:  Keynes, John = 330.156 K52      Keynes, Joan = 330.156 K522

When checking your call number for uniqueness in Voyager, always click on the Browse button.  This will allow you to see if your author/main entry had a different number for an earlier book .
