We'll have films Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening The first viewing is of Watoto Wa Mitaani, a documentary film about children living with HIV in Tanzania. Former UIUC alum, and documentarian, Michael Stewart, will be introducing the film this evening, at 7pm in the Main Library, Room 66.

And, please join us for any or all of the films.

Synopses:

Watoto Wa Mitaani
Documentarian and UIUC alum, Michael Stewart seeks to discover the personalities of 5 street children while at the same time understanding the large scale circumstances that confront them on a daily basis. Issues such as poverty, HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, sexual violence, and a lack of shelter interplay on the streets. In this setting the boys' talents, warm personalities and general happiness provide a stark contrast, as well as a glimpse into Tanzania's and Africa's strength. Guest Speaker: Michael Stewart.

Tuesday, we will be showing Something Like Happiness: This multi-award winning film highlights the lives of three friends living in a Czech housing project who find that happiness comes from the place where you least expect it in this quirky and heartfelt drama. As the shadow of the country’s largest chemical factory looms over their bleak suburb, they hold out hope for a brighter future in another place.

And on Wednesday, Gie. Based on a true story, Soe Hok Gie was a Chinese-Indonesian student activist in the sixties. Set in one of the darkest eras of modern Indonesian history, the film Gie is an interpretation of actual events as narrated in the late activist’s journal. His life is a clash between the high drama of political events, and the small world of friendship and love. Guest Speaker: Tinuk Yampolsky
