Debate over Book Ban in Arlington Heights, IL

from the Chicago Tribune:

More than 500 northwest suburban residents turned out Thursday night for a long and impassioned debate on a proposal to remove nine books from a high school district's reading list, which some said was an attempt at censorship but others supported as an effort to protect students from smut.

Board members of Arlington Heights-based Township High School District 214 listened to public comment for hours before a scheduled vote on whether to approve the purchase of curriculum material that included the nine books.

More than 350 people signed up to speak, and the meeting room at district headquarters was filled to capacity. Audio of the meeting was piped into an overflow room.

The controversy over the books erupted this month when board member Leslie Pinney flagged books that she said contained explicit sexual images, graphic violence and vulgar language inappropriate for students.

OCLC Announces Merger

From the OCLC news release webpage:

RLG to Combine with OCLC

DUBLIN, Ohio, USA, 3 May 2006—Two of the world's largest membership-based information organizations have agreed to come together. The combined organization will offer an integrated product and service line, and will give libraries, archives and museums new leverage in developing services, standards and software that will help them support research and disseminate knowledge online.

The RLG Board of Directors and OCLC Board of Trustees have recommended that the two service and research organizations be combined effective July 1, 2006. If approved by RLG member institutions, RLG’s online products and services will be integrated with OCLC products and services, and RLG's program initiatives will be brought forward as a new division of OCLC Programs and Research.

A combined organization would provide an opportunity to leverage program strengths, services and innovative research initiatives, and to deliver more value to a greater number of libraries, museums, archives and other research organizations around the globe.
