Interdisciplinary Training for Undergraduates in Biological and Mathematical Sciences (UBM)

Deadline: 04/04/2007

The goal of the Undergraduate Biology and Mathematics (UBM) activity is to enhance undergraduate education and training at the intersection of the biological and mathematical sciences and to better prepare undergraduate biology or mathematics students to pursue graduate study and careers in fields that integrate the mathematical and biological sciences. The core of the activity is long-term research experiences for interdisciplinarily balanced teams of at least two undergraduates. Projects should focus on research at the intersection of the mathematical and biological sciences. Projects should provide students exposure to contemporary mathematics and biology, addressed with modern research tools and methods. That is, projects must be genuine research experiences rather than rehearsals of research methods. Projects must involve students from both areas in collaborative research experiences and include joint mentorship by faculty in both fields. In addition, it is expected that projects will strengthen the research and education capacity, infrastructure, and culture of the participating institutions. To this end, projects should create models for education in the mathematical and biological sciences and influence the direction of academic programs for a broad range of students. UBM is a joint effort of the Education and Human Resources (EHR), Biological Sciences (BIO), and Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) Directorates at NSF. Research activities should focus on areas funded by the Division for Mathematical Sciences and the Directorate for Biological Sciences. NSF does not normally support bioscience research with disease-related goals, including work on the etiology, diagnosis or treatment of physical or mental disease, abnormality, or malfunction in human beings or animals. Within this context, there is room for a variety of activities, ranging from undergraduate research participation, through curriculum and faculty development, as well as internships outside the academic institution. The program encourages collaborations that bring together biological and mathematical scientists from associate, baccalaureate, masters, or Ph.D. granting institutions, minority serving institutions, national and regional organizations, and that may involve industrial or government laboratories. Opportunities for partnering across institutions and for developing international collaborations are welcome.

SUPPORT PROVIDED: NSF anticipates making 6 to 9 standard grants, including 2 to 3 institutional awards and 4 to 6 group awards. The anticipated funding amount is $3.3 million in FY 2007, pending the availability of funds. The duration of projects may be up to five years (for Institutional projects), or up to three years (for Group projects), and NSF strongly encourages projects of these durations. Total award sizes for Institutional projects should not exceed an average of $200,000 per year. Total award sizes for Group projects should not exceed $80,000 per year. Cost sharing is not required by NSF. An administrative allowance, limited to 25 percent of the participant support stipend amount only, is allowed for UBM awards as partial reimbursement of indirect costs.

APPLICANT INFORMATION: The categories of proposers identified in the Grant Proposal Guide are eligible to submit proposals under this program solicitation. PLEASE NOTE: Only undergraduate students who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions can be supported with NSF funds. NOTE: Foreign researchers at U.S. institutions may be able to apply for this award through their institution. Contact the program officer for details.

Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation
Grants for Alcohol Research

DEADLINES ANNOUNCED: 02/01/2007 and 09/01/2007

The Alcoholic Beverage Medical Research Foundation is a nonprofit independent research organization that provides support for scientific studies on the use and prevention of misuse of alcoholic beverages. The mission of the Foundation includes: (1) achieving a better understanding of the effects of alcohol on the health and behavior of individuals; (2) providing the scientific basis for prevention and treatment of alcohol misuse and alcoholism; (3) funding innovative, high-quality research; (4) supporting promising new investigators; and (5) communicating information effectively with the research community and other interested parties. The Foundation accepts applications for grants to conduct research on important aspects of alcohol consumption and its effects. Overall, the following areas are more directly related to the mission of the Foundation, and therefore, are of greater interest: factors influencing transitions in drinking patterns and behavior; effects of moderate use of alcohol on health and well-being; mechanisms underlying the behavioral and biomedical effects of alcohol; and biobehavioral/interdisciplinary research on the etiology of alcohol misuse. The Foundation does not encourage applications on treatment of the complications of advanced alcoholism. However, research involving treatment intended to elucidate the pathogenesis of alcohol-related problems will be considered. Non-research activities such as education projects, public awareness efforts and referral services are not eligible for support. The mission of the ABMRF grant program is to energize the field by helping researchers begin their careers and position them to attract greater funding from other sources with the track record resulting from a Foundation grant.

SUPPORT PROVIDED: Approximately US $2 million is available each year to fund newly approved applications and continuation of previously funded projects. Funds may be requested in U.S. or Canadian currency for a period of up to two years. Funding of the second year depending on the availability of funds and satisfactory progress during the first year. Most annual awards do not exceed $50,000, which includes a maximum of 15 percent indirect costs. Funds may be used for expenses related to the conduct of the approved research project, including salaries and wages, equipment, supplies, travel, and other necessary expenses.

APPLICANT INFORMATION: Applications may be submitted by public or private nonprofit organizations such as universities, colleges, hospitals, research institutes and organizations, and governmental research agencies and laboratories in the United States and Canada. Grants are made only to institutions on behalf of a named principal investigator, not to individuals. The proposed principal investigator of the research project must be a faculty or staff memberof the applicant institution. This person must be qualified to direct the research and is responsible for its conduct. Persons on training status--such as undergraduate, graduate and medical students, postdoctoral fellows, interns and residents--are not eligible to serve as principal investigators, unless they will be in independent faculty positions, or the equivalent, at the start of the grant period.

APPLICATION INFORMATION: Applications are due by February 1 and September 1 as postmark deadlines. An application package must be postmarked by that date. If the date falls on a weekend or holiday, the postmark deadline is the most recent weekday before February 1 or September 1.
Human and Social Dynamics (HSD) is an NSF-wide priority area that includes all NSF disciplines and fields. The focus on dynamics--on how cognitive systems, individuals, formal and informal organizations, cultures, and societies evolve and change over space and time--distinguishes research in the HSD priority area. Projects will explore the dynamics of changes that range in time from nanoseconds to millennia and across scales ranging from the internal workings of the human mind to the interplay of global social and cultural systems. In the FY 2007 HSD competition there will be only three areas of emphasis for consideration: Agents of Change (AOC, IRIS record 13585), Dynamics of Human Behavior (DHB, this record) and Decision Making, Risk and Uncertainty (DRU, see IRIS record 21345). Research projects that involve more than one of these emphasis areas are encouraged, but a primary area of emphasis must be identified. Research in the Dynamics of Human Behavior focuses on multidisciplinary examinations of dynamics--change in human behavior over time. Examples include the dynamics through which individuals and organizations (including families and other informal organizations) create, grow, learn, change, and act under the impetus of internal and external stimuli; the influence organizational, community, and environmental structures and processes have on these dynamics; the interplay of evolutionary forces and human behavioral change; and individual cognitive, computational, linguistic, developmental, social, biological, and other processes as dynamic evolving systems. These processes include systems of coordination and control in the behavior of individuals, the dynamics of coordination between individuals, and the dynamics of change across the life span of individuals and organizations. DHB research may draw upon formal concepts about dynamics from biology and mathematics, the physical sciences, information science and engineering to characterize dynamic behavior, such as work that calls upon complexity theory, agent-based or animal models, cognitive models, stochastic models, dynamical systems theory and bifurcation analysis. The interdisciplinary nature of the work may link the behavior of individuals and/or organizations and their social, cognitive or biological underpinnings, as they evolve over varying time scales, to influences including natural and built environments, geographical contexts, and social networks. Any tools and models for understanding human behavior that are developed as part of this competition should have applications across a broad array of HSD problems. HSD awards will enable researchers and educators to pursue different kinds of activities: (1) Full Research projects will support multidisciplinary teams of three or more investigators from at least two different fields in projects that use interdisciplinary approaches to advance fundamental understanding about human and social dynamics. Projects are expected to have significant educational or other broader impacts in addition to advancing fundamental knowledge. HSD awards will enable researchers and educators to pursue different kinds of activities: (1) Full Research projects will support multidisciplinary teams of three or more investigators from at least two different fields in projects that use interdisciplinary approaches to advance fundamental understanding about human and social dynamics. (2) Exploratory Research and HSD Research Community Development projects will support multidisciplinary teams of three or more investigators from at least two different fields, typically for one or two years. (A) Exploratory Research projects enable teams to perform preliminary activities that provide the basis for further work. (B) HSD Research Community Development projects will support interdisciplinary educational activities and other broad-ranging efforts, including research workshops and training activities that aim to increase awareness, capabilities, and networks within and across scholarly communities, with an eye to enabling interdisciplinary collaborations and increasing the quality of HSD research.

SUPPORT PROVIDED: In FY 2007, Human and Social Dynamics will support two types of Full Research proposals: Type 1, with maximum award sizes of $750,000, and Type 2, with maximum award sizes of $1,250,000. It is expected that most (approximately 50 to 70) awards will be made as Type 1 awards and a much smaller set (approximately 8 to 10) will be made as Type 2 awards. In addition to Type 1 and Type 2 Full Research proposals, HSD will continue to support Exploratory Research and HSD Research Community Development (ERCD) proposals, with maximum award sizes of $125,000.

Deadlines: November 15, 2006
April 3, 2007
Maximum award: $30,000

Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants is the first new program under the NEH’s new Digital Humanities Initiative. The name "Start-Up Grant" is deliberately evocative of the technology start-up--a company like an Apple Computer or a Google that took a brilliant idea and, with a small amount of seed money, was able to grow it into a new way of doing business. NEH's Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants will encourage scholars with bright new ideas and provide the funds to get their projects off the ground. Some projects will be practical, others completely blue sky. Some will fail while others will succeed wildly and develop into important projects. But all will incorporate new ways of studying the humanities.

The cross-divisional nature of the Start-Up Grants is a key. Applicants don't need to be concerned with determining exactly which NEH division or program is best suited for their projects. Their job is to be innovative and the NEH's job is to provide the funding they need to be successful. NEH staff will work with potential applicants in the pre-application stages to help them craft their submissions.

NEH Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants are offered for the planning or initial stages of digital humanities initiatives in all areas of NEH concern: research, publication, preservation, access, teacher training, and dissemination in informal or formal educational settings. The maximum award is $30,000. Applications should describe the concept or problem that is being addressed, the plan of work, the experience of the project team as it relates to the plan, and the intended outcomes of both the grant and the larger project that the grant will initiate.

DEADLINES ANNOUNCED: 12/01/2006
04/01/2007

The Program for Minority Research Training In Psychiatry (PMRTP) is designed to increase the number of underrepresented minority men and women in the field of psychiatric research. Research training offers the opportunity to engage in scientific investigation across the full array of disciplines, from basic neuroscience, genetics, and pharmacology to the cognitive behavioral, and social sciences, clinical psychiatry, and mental health services research. Research exposure can help students and trainees develop sound skills for clinical assessment and treatment planning.

SUPPORT PROVIDED: Support from Program for Minority Research Training In Psychiatry (PMRTP) falls into three categories: stipends, travel, and tuition and fees. Stipends are based on the trainee's years of relevant experience and the length of the research training experience. For current full-year equivalents contact the sponsor. Previous full-year equivalents were $20,772 for medical students, $45,048 to $46,992 for residents and up to $51,036 for post-residency fellows. Stipends for shorter periods of time are prorated. Trainees can not receive funds from another federal source at the same time; however, stipends may be augmented through nonfederal sources. Travel funds are available on a limited basis for full-time trainees and "mini-fellows" to travel to the APA annual meeting or to the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology meeting. Limited tuition assistance is available for full-time trainees to attend specific courses that are required as part of their training.

APPLICANT INFORMATION: The program provides funding for short and long-term training opportunities at three levels: Medical School, Residency and Post-residency. National competitions also enable qualified "mini-fellows" to attend research-oriented meetings of psychiatric organizations. Preference in selection is given to underrepresented minorities such as American Indians, Blacks/African-Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, or other ethnic or racial group members found to be underrepresented in biomedical or behavioral research. The PMRTP is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and is administered by the American Psychiatric Institute for Research and Education. The deadlines for training under the PMRTP depend on the trainee's level of training and the length of proposed training. Residents seeking a year or more of training and post- resident fellows should apply by December 1. Interviews will be required of all post-residency applicants and may be required of residents. Medical students and residents seeking less than one year of training should apply three months before the proposed training is to begin. Summer medical students who will start their training by June 30 should apply by April 1. Deadlines for "mini-fellows" vary and are specified when a competition is announced. Trainees who are interested in applying are encouraged to contact the PMRTP office to receive the criteria for selection and the application materials appropriate to their level of education.
