Library Learning

I'm excited to kick-off this new blog for the University Library's Information Literacy Services and Instruction programs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. My goal is to share information about the breadth and depth of teaching and learning, orientation, and outreach activities across the University Library and to highlight innovative, inspiring, and interesting approaches and ideas. I hope that our information literacy community of practice will grow stronger and larger through learning about the range of programs we offer and the unique programs that are not widely known. The primary audience I have in mind are librarians, staff, and graduate assistants in the University Library but I welcome everyone who has an interest in information literacy.

Coordinator for Information Literacy Services and Instruction

One of the goals I have for this blog is to introduce the PEOPLE who make the information literacy program work and who work to make it even better. Before I ask anyone else to let me do a focus post on him/her, I thought I should subject myself to this first. So ....

Hi everyone! I'm Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe, the University Library's Coordinator for Information Literacy Services and Instruction. I've had this position since 2002, which is also when the position came into being. Before that the University Library didn't have a faculty member charged with leadership and development of information literacy programs. Honestly though - great work was already going on (due to people you'll meet later on this blog!) - but I think I've also been able to contribute in a number of ways including by garnering support for programs, improving communication within the Library about related issues, and making connections with campus groups and initiatives. My efforts focus on working with librarians and staff one-on-one, and with library units/divisions and library or campus working groups/committees as well as establishing infrastructure support for information literacy such as physical facilities, equipment, and software (e.g., Camtasia), virtual tools (e.g., e*vents and LibGuides), and professional development and training opportunities. Information literacy is also my research area and the area where I am active professionally so there is great synergy in all aspects of my work. I am very passionate about the Library's contributions to student learning and the role of librarians in higher education and feel very privileged to work at such a great Library and University.

A joy of my job is the great colleagues I work with and I look forward to introducing them on this blog and highlighting their wonderful work!
