Create "Alerts" with Google Scholar
Long on my personal wish list, and now available! One can now sign up for email alerts based on Google Scholar searches!
[Many thanks to the ResourceShelf, where I first learned of this development!]
So here's how you set up a daily alert in Google Scholar, step by step:
- Go to Google Scholar, http://scholar.google.com
- Click on Advanced Scholar Search
- Create your search. This might be a good time to review Advanced Search Tips -- the link is at the top, right corner of the screen!
- After you have created your search strategy, click on "Search Scholar"
- Review your hits, and revise your search strategy, if necessary
- Click on the "envelope" icon in the green limits bar
- You'll be brought to the Alerts screen where you can see a sample of the hits that would be sent to you.
- Provide the email address to which the alerts should be sent.
NOTE: If you are logged into Gmail / Google, you'll just be able to send the alerts to your Gmail account. However, if you are not logged in, you'll be able to provide any email address.
- Choose to receive 10-20 hits a day, and click on Create Alert.
- A verification email will be sent to the designated email address. Confirm it.
- That's it; you're done!
Tips & Caveats:
- You can't limit by date, since Alerts are designed to bring you citations to materials that have most recently been added to Google Scholar
- Currently, you can't create Alerts for particular journal titles
- To create an alert to receive notification when papers cite a particular article: (1) Find the article in Google Scholar; (2) "Cited by..." link for the article, (3) and proceed as above!
