The new Business Instructional Facility at the COB has been certified as platinum for environmental standards.

This afternoon, Dean Larry DeBrock announced this exciting news to the College via e-mail:

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the U.S. Green Building Council has made its decision on the LEED rating for BIF. We earned their highest rating - Platinum!

This recognition of our commitment to sustainability and the environment puts us in a very exclusive class. We are the first college of business at any public university to receive a platinum rating. BIF is among only a dozen platinum certified projects at any university in the world, and is the first at any university or college in Illinois, where only 14 other buildings have been certified platinum.

Indeed, this is a great achievement. BEL salutes the forward thinking of the College on energy conservation and environmental sustainability for the 21st century, especially as BIF is also a very aesthetically pleasing building.

Today marks a new type of salute: saluting other peers at the Top 50 B-School Libraries.

BELlog has learned Michael Halperin, Director of the Lippincott Library (affectionately known as the Wharton Library) at the University of Pennsylvania, is receiving Gale Cengage Learning Award for Excellence in Business Librarianship, an honor sponsored by Gale Cengage Learning and administered by ALA's Reference and User Services Association (RUSA).

From ALA's website:

Award winners are selected for their outstanding contribution to the field of business librarianship. Halperin was selected most notably for his more than three decades of work as an innovator, teacher and mentor in the profession. The committee, chaired by RUSA member and Rutgers University Business Librarian Theodora Haynes, cited Halperin’s Business FAQ, a tool he designed and has shared with a consortium of institutions, as an invaluable resource that even now, a decade after its introduction, serves as the starting point for many researchers in business and economics.

The Business FAQ is noteworthy as BEL is one of 25 b-school libraries which share this invaluable service. BEL's is called Fast Answers and it is used frequently by our grad assistants who are librarians in training to answer questions.

The Wharton Library was also the first to enable end-user searching, training thousands of students and faculty on how to use Dialog, LexisNexis, CD-ROM, and now web products.

Halperin has authored many scholarly works as well.

On a personal note, I cannot think of anyone more deserving than Mike Halperin for this year's award. I met Mike at ABLD in 1990, and was guest visitor at his library, hosted by former AD Ruth Pagell, who won this award in 1995. Other ABLD colleagues who have been recipients were last year's honoree, Gary White of Penn State;Chuck Popovich of Ohio State (now retired); John Ganly (soon to be retired) of NYPL; Judy Nixon (Purdue); and Catherine Friedman, AUL at UC-San Diego.

Congratulations to Mike Halperin, the true Wizard in the provision of Business Information Services. You can see his picture here.

Sometimes they just listened to the researcher who wanted to air a concern about school work.

Today is a happy day at the University Library. Paula T. Kaufman, dean and professor of Library Administration, will be invested this afternoon. She is the first dean on campus to receive a chair this decade.

From the Library news:

A $5 million gift has established a deanship at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Professor Paula T. Kaufman, university librarian and dean of libraries for the University of Illinois, will be honored as the inaugural Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson Dean of Libraries at an Investiture ceremony hosted by Chancellor Richard Herman and Provost Linda Katehi on April 29, 2009.

The Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson University Library Deanship is one of the first deanships at the University of Illinois to be endowed at this level. The seven-figure donation will create an endowment—a permanent trust that is invested to provide a long-term source of funding—which will be used to finance the perpetual needs of the University Library.

About Dean Kaufman:

Paula Kaufman joined the University Library in 1999 after serving in key library positions at the University of Tennessee and Columbia University. She has four decades of experience as a librarian and has written and made presentations on a number of issues pertaining to scholarly information, privacy, copyright, research libraries, recruitment, and leadership.

Dean Kaufman is thrilled about this honor and said:

“Juanita and Robert Simpson have bestowed the greatest possible honor to the University Library with the establishment of this deanship. By endowing this position, they ensure that our Library continues to attract leadership of the highest order and they make certain President James’ vision of a great library that recruits the best faculty and students to this University is secure,” said Professor Kaufman. “I am humbled and honored to be the first person to carry the title of the Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson Dean of the Library and University Librarian. It is only through the Simpsons’ foresight and generosity that this is possible."

BEL salutes our leader, Dean Paula Kaufman, and former business librarian.

From the College of Business website:

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Lawrence DeBrock, a noted economist and longtime University of Illinois professor and administrator, has been named dean of the university’s College of Business, pending approval by the U. of I. Board of Trustees at its May 21 meeting in Chicago.

DeBrock has served as interim dean of the nationally ranked business school since 2008, when former dean Avijit Ghosh was named vice president for technology and economic development.

Chancellor Richard Herman was quoted about Dean DeBrock:

“In his role as interim dean he has shown an ability to provide vision and get people to follow him. He is an individual of considerable accomplishment and speaks passionately about the college – its faculty, staff and students and has great support from them. We are delighted to send his name to our board.”

DeBrock's appointment would be the ninth dean in 95 years for the college, which is also rated in the Top Twenty in terms of scholarly output and impact. The College is also rated in the top 15 in undergraduate programs and in the top 40 of graduate school programs.

DeBrock says his three decades at the U. of I. will be an advantage in building on recent successes such as faculty hiring, building programs, expanding student facilities and improving external relations.

Larry is a dedicated educator as well as an excellent scholar. He uses BEL over the campus network frequently. BEL salutes Dean DeBrock for this distinguished position as he has a great love for the University, has the trust of his colleagues, and the students feel they can come to him for advice. He's also one of the Chicago Cubs' enthusiastic fans.

He said he got a job working in BEL and read as many books on trading that he could, and liked interacting with the Bloomberg machine. Glenn said BEL had a wealth of information for him.
