Linking to Full-text Journal Articles from EndNote Using Discover
The University of Illinois library has implemented a link resolver that we call "Discover" in
many databases. You may have seen the Discover link
in
PubMed, Web of Science, and many other article databases. When you click on the Discover link in
these databases a new browser window pops up that provides links to the full text of the article
(if we have an e-subscription), and several other facets about the article [

about Discover].
You can link to full-text via the Discover link resolver from within EndNote, too, by following
these simple instructions [
with thanks to John East,
University of Queensland]. This means that, when you're looking at the full record for some
reference within EndNote, you'll be able to link out directly to the full text of the article.
First, a few caveats:
- This procedure only works with
journal articles. You cannot link to full-text electronic books.
- The references in your EndNote library must contain the
ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) of the journal in the ISSN field. If
you have exported or downloaded the references from a database, they will probably contain this
data.
- This procedure will not work with EndNote 6 and earlier versions.
- Our link resolver (Discover) is still being implemented and does not yet work with all our
online collections of journal articles. This means that, in some cases, it will just link you to
the University of Illinois Library catalog, to enable you to search further for the journal.
Setting Up EndNote to Work with Discover
- From within EndNote, click:
Edit /
Preferences
- From within Preferences, click on
OpenURL/PDF (or
OpenURL in earlier versions)
- When the OpenURL pane is displayed, check the box labeled
Enable OpenURL
- In the first box (OpenURL Path), delete the existing text and enter the following:
http://openurl.library.uiuc.edu/sfxlcl3/
- In the second box (Arguments), delete the existing text and enter the following:
?sid=SFX&aufirst=AUFIRST&aulast=AULAST&issn=ISSN&atitle=ATITLE&title
=TITLE&volume=VOLUME&issue=ISSUE&date=DATE&spage=SPAGE
NOTE: If you have copied and pasted the above text,
remove any line breaks after you paste it into the box. It should be one continuous string
of text.
- Click on "OK" to save these changes.
Connecting to full text from within EndNote
Once you've followed the set up procedures above:
To connect to the full-text from a citation in your EndNote library, you must first
double click on the reference so you are viewing the full EndNote record for the
citation.
When the reference window has opened, click on
References on the top menu bar.
Use the drop-down menu to select
URL and then
OpenURL Link. (In earlier versions of EndNote, just click on
OpenURL or
OpenURL Link.)
EndNote will send a message to Discover, which will attempt to locate the full text of the
article. A new Discover window will open in your web browser.
Providing that the EndNote reference contains the ISSN (International Standard Serial Number),
one of several things should appear in the Discover window:
-
Best: You will see one or more
links to the full-text of the journal article. If you are accessing from off
campus, you may be asked for your normal U of I netID and password.
-
Or: Discover will fail to locate the article, and will present you with a screen saying
"No online full text available for this item". If this happens, click on the link for
University of Illinois Library Catalog, and Discover will search for the ISSN in
the catalog. If it locates the ISSN, you will see the catalog record for the journal. If the issue
which you require is available online, you will be able to connect to it from the catalog in the
normal way. Otherwise, you'll need to make a trip to the library for the print version of the
article.
-
Or: If the University of Illinois does not have a print or electronic subscription, under
"Additional Services", you will see a link for
ILL (Interlibrary Loan). Place a request for this item using your ILLiad account,
signing in with your netID and password. The citation will be pre-populated for you in the ILL form
so you won't need to fill in the author, journal, page numbers, etc.
