Obtain PDFs or Link to Full-text Journal Articles from EndNote
The University of Illinois library has implemented a link resolver (SFX OpenURL technology) that
locally we call "Discover" in many databases. You may have seen the Discover link
in
PubMed, Web of Science, and many other article databases. When you click on the Discover link in
these databases a new browser window pops up that provides links to the full text of the article
(if we have an e-subscription), and several other facets about the article [

about Discover].
You can link to full-text via the Discover link resolver from within EndNote, too, by following
these simple instructions [
with thanks to John East,
University of Queensland]. This means that, when you're looking at the full record for some
reference within EndNote, you'll be able to link out directly to the full text of the article.
Even better, if you're using EndNote X3 or higher, using this same technology you'll be able to
download the PDFs for articles to your computer. Links to the PDFs that you've downloaded by
this means will be embedded in the EndNote records, for quick access.
First, a few caveats:
- Linking to the full text of articles via OpenURL technology is available for EndNote v. 8 and
higher.
- Downloading PDFs through EndNote (which also uses OpenURL technology) is only available for
EndNote v. X3 and higher
NOTE: be sure you've downloaded the latest patch from EndNote!
- This procedure only works with
journal articles. You cannot link to full-text electronic books.
- The references in your EndNote library must contain the
ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) of the journal in the ISSN field. If
you have exported or downloaded the references from a database, they will probably contain this
data.
- This procedure will not work with EndNote 7 and earlier versions.
- If the Discover (OpenURL) link doesn't lead you directly to the full text of an article, don't
despair! Discover is not infallible... we may actually have electronic access. Check
the
SFX to see if, in fact, we have
e-access to the journal in question. Or

Setting Up EndNote X.3: Change the Preferences
This will enable you to easily access the full text of articles or to download the pdf of
articles to your computer.
- Make sure you have the latest update (patch) for EndNote: From within EndNote X3, click:
Help / EndNote Program Updates, and follow the prompts.
- From within EndNote X3, click:
Edit /
Preferences
- From within Preferences, click on
URLs & Links (in early versions this was termed
OpenURL/PDF or
OpenURL)
- In the
ISI Base URL section, this URL should be in place:
http://gateway.isiknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi
- In
the OpenURLArguments section), delete the existing text and enter the following:
?sid=SFX&aufirst=AUFIRST&aulast=AULAST&issn=ISSN&atitle=ATITLE&title=TITLE&volume=VOLUME&issue=ISSUE&date=DATE&spage=SPAGE
NOTE: If you have copied and pasted the above text,
remove any line breaks after you paste it into the box. It should be one continuous string
of text.
- Make sure the option to "
Copy new file attachments to the default file attachment folder and create a relative
link" is checked
- From within
Preferences, click on
Find Full Text
- All four check boxes should be checked, so all four technologies for locating full text will be
employed (ISI Full text links; DOI; PubMed Linkout; OpenURL)
- The
OpenURL Path should be:
http://openurl.library.illinois.edu/sfxlcl3/
- The
Authenticating URL should be:
http://www.library.illinois.edu/proxy/go.php?url=
- Click on
"OK" to save these changes.
