Asian Library Relocates

Apr 20, 2011

As part of the transition to the new International and Area Studies (IAS) Library (opening Fall 2011), Asian language materials will now be circulated from the Central Circulation desk and the materials will be accessible from the Main Stacks.  Faculty, students, and other patrons wishing to browse the Asian-language circulating collection should enter Main Stacks via the Central Circulation desk on the the 2nd Floor of the Main Library. Circulating materials can also be requested via the online catalog for pick-up or delivery to campus mailboxes.  Until the opening of the new IAS Library, Asian library personnel, partial reference, and current periodical collections are now temporarily housed in 425 Main Library with Africana services and collections. The Asian Library hours (8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday), its website (www.library.uiuc.edu/asx/), and phone number (217-333-1501) remain unchanged.  Faculty and staff in the Asian Library will continue to provide core services, including reference and instruction, throughout the transition.

The International and Area Studies Library is scheduled to open this fall in 321 Main Library, with additional offices and a seminar room in 325 Main Library. The IAS Library will be the University's gateway to the world of information and scholarship about international, global, and area studies, connecting scholars and students to the knowledge that is crucial to developing global competencies through the study of global concerns and transnational issues as well as the study of distinct nations and regions.  The IAS Library will enhance opportunities for collaboration and coordination among the Library's area and international studies specialists and provide a single physical service point and web presence for library users whose needs span multiple regions.

Details about planning for the IAS Library are available on the Library's New Service Models website. If you have any questions about the Asian Library services, please contact Karen Wei, Head, Asian Library.  If you have any other questions about Library services, please contact Scott Walter, Associate University Librarian for Services and Associate Dean of Libraries.
