Asian Studies on campus

  • Departmant of East Asian Languages and Cultures
  • With the growth of interest in East Asian studies during the 1970s and 1980s, the University created the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures in 1991 and vested it with the authority to grant undergraduate and graduate degrees. Since then, the University of Illinois has enjoyed one of the fastest growing graduate programs in East Asian studies in the nation. By 1995, the University ranked in the top fifteen universities nationwide in numbers of Ph.D.s earned in East Asian studies. East Asian Languages and Cultures is now a department of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Department's own rich offerings are supplemented by courses taught by the Program for the Study of Religion, Anthropology, Political Science, History, Linguistics, Comparative Literature, Cinema Studies, Sociology, and Women's Studies.The Department also offers numerous opportunities for language study in China, Japan, and Korea.
  • Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies
  • The Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies is a U.S. Department of Education Title VI Comprehensive National Resource Center in partnership with Indiana University East Asian Studies Center. CEAPS is one of the most vibrant interdisciplinary programs on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. CEAPS supports teaching and research on topics related to Asia Pacific across all disciplines, and works actively with all academic units and student groups to promote and enhance campus-wide understanding of Asia Pacific.
  • Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies
  • The Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (CSAMES) promotes research and scholarship in South Asia and the Middle East. CSAMES was designated a National Resource Center (Title VI) 2006-2010 by the US Department of Education for the study and teaching of the Middle East, enabling the Center to further strengthen its commitment to an academic inquiry into a region that is home to some of the world’s oldest religions and civilizations.
